Summary:
The Greater Bay Area strategy accelerated the “Guangzhou-Foshan Urban Integration”. The transportation time between the two cities shortened to about an hour, facilitating business expansion and labour flows. Around thirty-eight designated hospitals (thirty from Guangzhou and eight from Foshan) have shared the general medical insurance for residents in the two cities. The two cities have also planned to build primary and secondary schools jointly in their three Cooperation Demonstration Zones.
The regional integration has resulted in a catch-up effect for Foshan, which experienced a dramatic increase in per capita disposable income from RMB 36,554.70 in 2014 to RMB 57,444.91 in 2020, a more than 50% growth. In particular, the gap in consumption expenditure between Foshan and Guangzhou decreased from RMB 7,341.81 in 2014 to RMB 6,619.03 in 2020.
