Chart of the Week March 22, 2024│ Singapore’s Diversifying Sustainable Investment Origins

Summary:

Singapore emerges among the ASEAN Member States as the most attractive destination for sustainable venture capital (VC) investment, exhibiting the most pronounced upward trend. Though notable growth has been observed among other ASEAN countries, Singapore’s trajectory stands out.

Delving further into the origins of these investments reveals that a majority stems from self-investment.  While Singapore and the United States are the main drivers of sustainable VC investment in Singapore, the landscape of investment origins has diversified with time. Notably, the United Kingdom and Japan initiated investment in Singapore in 2018, while South Korea began in 2020.

Highlights:

  • Singapore leads in sustainable VC investment within ASEAN. Other ASEAN members, particularly Indonesia and Vietnam, have also attracted more investment over time.
  • Domestic sources significantly contribute to sustainable VC investment in Singapore.
  • Growing interest from major economies such as the UK, Japan and South Korea, indicate increasing cross-border engagement in sustainable investment within Singapore.
